We’re proud to present Issue 26 of From Glasgow to Saturn, the magazine’s first ever themed issue.

The response to our theme of ‘transformation’ has been fascinating, with so many different interpretations of one single word from so many brilliant writers, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who submitted work for this issue.

What we chose to include in the end was the writing that took us to another place. In some cases this was literal – of the five stories published here, four are set outside of the UK – and in others more figurative, the writer taking us to the darkest recesses of the human experience. 

We’re delighted to present to you writing from James Carson, George Craig, John Horn, Vivien Jones, Sarah Lowndes, Gillean McDougall, John O’Donnell, Hayley Rushing, Sandra Webster and JL Williams.  Issue 26 also includes another fascination Quick View interview, this time from ex-police officer and Glaswegian writer Karen Campbell.

Message from GUW sending apologies to all those who expressed an interest in the Graham Fulton talk tomorrow night – this event has been cancelled.

Glasgow has been transformed into Springtime loveliness in the sunshine, so wherever you are, get inspired, get writing and send us your fabulous ‘transformation’ themed pieces. Long, short, poetry, prose – we’re not fussed what shape it comes in, as long as it gives us editors that little twist in our bellies when we read it. This is  From Glasgow to Saturn’s first ever themed issue, and your chance to be part of the magazine’s history. One week to go to the 2nd April deadline.

Details of another great talk organised by Glasgow University Writers below. This is the last in the current series, so if you haven’t made it along to any of these talks yet, this is your last chance! These events are informal and informative and well worth checking out for the insight they provide on the life of a working writer.

 

Glasgow University Writers are delighted to announce that Graham Fulton will be coming to chat with us on Thursday 29 March, 5.30-7.30pm. 

 Graham has been writing and performing poetry since he joined Tom Leonard’s Paisley Writers’ Group in 1987. His collections of poems Humouring the Iron Bar Man published by Polgyon was followed by Knights of the Lower Floors. He has appeared in literary publications in the UK and USA and been broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland and Scottish Television. His latest collection of poetry is Open Plan, published by Smokestack Books. You can find out more about Graham at www.grahamfulton-poetry.com

A huge thank you to Richie McCaffery, Maggie Ritchie, Alan Bissett, JL Williams, Zoe Strachan and Kei Miller for their fantastic readings the other night, and thanks to everyone who came along to listen. Hope you enjoyed yourselves.

JL Williams mentioned a couple of events while she was speaking and has sent us links for anyone who might be interested in finding out more. The first was the City of Literature’s enLIGHTen project, where six writers have written pieces inspired by Enlightenment quotes. You can listen to readings of these online while wandering around Edinburgh looking at the projections of the quotes that inspired them.  All the info and the ‘listen’ links are at
