GUW Speaker Events: Dave Manderson

A message from Glasgow University Writers:

Glasgow University Writers, a group of continuing and former MLitt students, invite you to attend the latest of our guest speaker events.

Dave Manderson will give an informal talk and reading on Thursday 23rd February, 5.30pm-7.30pm in the Edwin Morgan Room, No 5 University Gardens.

Dave is the author of Lost Bodies and a lecturer in Creative Writing and Screenwriting at the University of the West of Scotland. A graduate of Glasgow University’s MLitt in Creative Writing, Dave established the Real to Reel Short Film Festival in Glasgow, which ran for nine years, as well as the monthly Reading Allowed event at Tchai Ovna Teahouse, now a well-established event. Aye Write / Write Now

Only 6 weeks to go until the Aye Write Festival kicks off in Glasgow’s Mitchell Library. If you’ve never been, From Glasgow to Saturn can’t recommend this wonderful literary festival enough. Last year the Mitchell was buzzing, and we had fun getting up close and personal with some of our very favourite writers, as well as finding some completely new ones to fall in love with. This year will see the exciting addition of a Write Now, a conference dedicated to writers organised by University of Strathclyde. From Glasgow to Saturn Reading Party

It’s been a long time coming, but we finally got our act together, booked a room and chatted up some lovely writers. A few bits and pieces still to be finalised, but we couldn’t wait to share the news that we’ve bagged a double delight of readings from both  Alan Bissett and Zoë Strachan.  And that for lovers of all things poetic, the wonderful  JL Williams will be presenting some of her amazing work, along with Richie McCaffery, whose poetry recently featured in Issue 24 of From Glasgow to Saturn.

GUW Speaker Event – Alan Bissett

Glasgow University Writers, a group of continuing and former Creative Writing MLitt students, have organised another of their brilliant guest speaker events. Details below.

 Alan Bissett will give an informal talk and reading on Thursday 2nd February, 5.30pm-7.30pm, in the Edwin Morgan Room at 101 University Gardens. Alan is the author of novels Boyracer, The Incredible Alan Spark, Death of a Ladies Man, as well as writer and performer of the ‘one woman show’, The Moira Monologues. Alan’s latest novel Pack Men was published in 2011 to critical acclaim.  A former teacher on Glasgow University’s MLitt in Creative Writing, Alan has won numerous awards in Scotland and the USA, including Scottish Writer of the Year at the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards in 2011. Film and television adaptations of two of his novels are currently underway. Readership 2011

Ok folks, our site stats are in for 2011, and this is how it looks.

  • We had 22,000 hits in 2011, which equates to an average of roughly 60 per day.
  • The most commonly viewed page was Download – the people who visit the site are clearly here to read.
  • The majority of our hits are from within the UK, but we’re also attracting attention from across the globe, including the USA, Hong Kong, Australia and Brazil.
  • In the 48 hours after our most recent issue went live in December 2011 we had 1,461 visitors to the site, and the majority of those visitors went straight to the Download button.

So, you lovely writers out there, it’s time to get your fabulous work out into the big, wide world, where it belongs.  22,000 people are waiting to read it.

Issue 24 submissions closed

Thank you to everyone who’s submitted their work for the next issue of From Glasgow to Saturn. Submissions are now closed, and we’ll be spending the next couple of weeks sifting through all your fabulous words to choose the content for Issue 24, which we’re aiming to publish before Christmas.

We’re also thrilled to announce that Spring 2012 will see the production of From Glasgow to Saturn‘s first ever themed issue, with the theme of TRANSFORMATION.  We welcome any interpretation on this theme in any genre.  Submissions will be open in February, so now’s the time to get thinking!

Submission deadline – Issue 24

Thank you to those of you who have already submitted to us for the next issue. We’re aiming to get this issue live before Christmas, so the deadline for submissions will be Monday 28th November.

 As ever we will consider anything that’s beautifully written and falls within our submission guidelines . Just a quick word for our fantastic prose writers: From Glasgow to Saturn‘s word limit may well be 3,000 words, but your story may not necessarily need to be 2,999 words long.  We love to read well-written short fiction, as well as your lovely longer pieces. Less can be more people, less can be more.

Writer Talks

Douglas Jackson Event

Glasgow University Writers are delighted to announce that Douglas Jackson will be coming to chat with us on 1st December, 5.30-7.30pm.

Douglas left school before the age of sixteen, and lucky chance took him to a youth placement scheme restoring a Roman marching camp in the Cheviot Hills, and his lifelong fascination with history took root. 

To date he has published three historical novels, Caligula – now translated into eleven languages – Claudius, and most recently Hero of Rome. This last novel is the beginning of a trilogy, with Defender of Rome and Avenger of Rome to follow.

Douglas worked as a journalist for over thirty years and was the Assistant Editor of The Scotsman until 2009, when he left journalism to write full-time.

This event will be held in the Edwin Morgan Room, No 5 University Gardens.  As usual, GUW invite you to bring along something to drink if you like, and will be providing glasses & a few nibbles.

Issue 23 online

Dear Readers,

It is with great excitement that we present Issue 23 of From Glasgow to Saturn, our first as the new editorial team.  We’re delighted to have captured, for your enjoyment, a collection of prose and poetry from Alan Gillespie, JoAnne McKay, Kerri Mclawlin, Jane Hartshorn, Greg Benson, Nick Boreham, Gary McGhee, Gerry Stewart, Sherezade García Rangel and H.J Rodgers.  We’re also pleased to introduce our new feature The Quick View, here featuring the writerly thoughts of JL Williams, along with three of her wonderful poems.

Many thanks to those of you who submitted work to From Glasgow to Saturn over the past few months.  Please continue to send us your fabulous writings, as without you we have no purpose. From Glasgow to Saturn is your magazine, presenting the best work from your very own writing community to the world.  And don’t forget you can come and say hello any time on facebook, twitter or via email. 

We’ll shortly be starting work on Issue 24, and, as ever welcome submissions from any students, staff or alumni of the University of Glasgow.
